Richard Blum, husband to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), is interested in becoming an ambassador. Some speculated that might mean retirement for the 87-year-old lawmaker.
Blum is seeking an ambassadorship in Europe and President Joe Biden is reportedly open to the idea, according to the Daily Wire. However, Feinstein has said she will not be retiring from Congress anytime soon despite pressure from her fellow Democrats to do so.
Feinstein has been at odds with her party lately with many questioning her fitness for office due to her age. However, these problems only seemed to come to a head after her comments regarding U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett during her nomination process.
Barrett was under fire from the left for being a devout Catholic, but they had little else to pin on her. Mostly, they opposed Barrett because she was a conservative and would tip the court with more originalist justices by a margin of 6-3, according to The Hill.
“This has been one of the best Senate hearings I have participated in,” Feinstein said at the time of the poised, prepared then-nominee. “Thank you for your fairness and opportunity of going back and forth. It leaves one with a lot of hopes.”.
Many in Feinstein’s party believed she wasn’t serious enough about how high the stakes were for the left on the courts. Another problem they had was that Feinstein wanted to preserve the 60-vote majority in the Senate, again at odds with some in her party who thought eliminating the legislative filibuster would let them ram through their radical agenda.
Feinstein ultimately stepped down from the Senate Judiciary Committee in November while not relinquishing her seat, the New York Times reported. Still, California Gov. Gavin Newsom told the media Wednesday about his possible replacements for her even though the only way his input would matter is if she left before her term was finished.
The left seems done with Feinstein and ready to move on. It’s possible she simply isn’t radical enough for the party and too friendly to the right. What’s unlikely is that it has anything to do with her age considering their party’s president is the oldest ever elected.
