Second gentleman Doug Emhoff describes wife as 'exceedingly normal'

Vice President Kamala Harris is no stranger to being on the receiving end of unflattering public characterizations, but she probably didn't expect the latest such attack to come from her own husband, Doug Emhoff, who recently described his wife in a rather unusual way, as the Washington Examiner reports.

The second gentleman made his attention-grabbing remarks during an interview with former Harris aide Symone Sanders-Townsend at the annual South by Southwest event in Austin, Texas.

“What do you think is the most surprising thing about Vice President Harris that people out there don't know?” Sanders-Townsend inquired.

Rather than touting his spouse's particular charms or talents which most would assume are necessary to rise to the high government office she has attained, Emhoff instead declared of Harris, “She's like, normal. She's exceedingly normal.” WATCH:

Emhoff went on to say that he would like to see “more Kamala Harrises” in government as well as in the military, citing a need for greater diversity and female representation in both realms.

Those head-scratching comments were not the only interesting tidbits to come out of Emhoff's sit-down with Sanders-Townsend, as the Examiner noted, as Harris' husband also elicited criticism for making an analogy between the forces of hate that led to the Holocaust and the expressions of concern from parents attending school board meetings here in the United States.

Speaking about a recent trip he made to Eastern Europe, Emhoff said, “I met one woman who was saved in the Holocaust in Germany, settled in Ukraine, and is now a refugee again back in Berlin. Hate is interconnected. You see it in the discourse in the country right now. You see it in the divide that we have. Just going to school meetings, you see the hate that is out there.”

Seeming to take a side in the battle lines that have emerged between parents and progressive school administrators as well as in the broader society, Emhoff continued, “We've got to step up and speak out, and we've got to call out the cowards out there. People, as my wife would say, 'these so-called leaders.' You can't be in leadership if you're not going to lead.”

“Not speaking out on trying to overthrow the government, trying to ban books – all these things that are ridiculous and that a vast majority of people in this country disagree with. These people just sit there, and they don't say a word!” Emhoff railed.

Weighing in on a whole host of topics in recent weeks, in early March, Emhoff was in the news for a chat with MSNBC's Jonathan Capehart in which he announced his intention to use his platform as the vice president's spouse to combat what he referred to as “toxic masculinity,” as the Daily Caller noted.

“There's too much of toxicity – masculine toxicity out there, and we've kind of confused what it means to be a man, what it means to be masculine,” Emhoff said.

“You've got this trope out there where you have to be tough and angry and lash out to be strong. I think it is just the opposite,” the second gentleman continued. “Strength is how you show your love for people. Strength is how you are for people and how you have their back and how you stick up for other people and pushing up and out against bullies.”

Dana Perino of Fox News was among those who expressed utter incredulity that Emhoff decided to highlight the supposed dilemma of “toxic masculinity,” musing, “Of all the issues, in all the world, this is the issue he's choosing,” underscoring the arguably unserious nature of not just his priorities, but those of the entire administration in which his wife serves.
