Sarah Huckabee Sanders reveals she is battling Thyroid cancer

As White House secretary under former President Donald Trump, Sarah Huckabee Sanders battled the media. Now she's in the fight for her life.

Sanders, who is the Republican nominee running for the Arkansas governor, revealed Friday that she had undergone surgery to remove her thyroid due to a cancer diagnosis, The Hill reported. She will undergo further treatment, but her prognosis is "excellent."

"I want to thank the Arkansas doctors and nurses for their world-class care, as well as my family and friends for their love, prayers, and support," Sanders said in a statement. "This experience has been a reminder that whatever battle you may be facing, don't lose heart," she added.

Sanders said she is eager to return to the campaign trail soon. "As governor, I will never quit fighting for the people of our great state."

Earlier this month, Sanders' doctor ordered a biopsy on an "area of concern" discovered during a routine checkup. Sanders' surgery included the removal of the thyroid and adjacent lymph nodes in her neck.

Her doctor, John Sims, released a statement describing Sanders' prognosis as "excellent." Sims said that Sanders was diagnosed with the most common type of thyroid cancer, Stage 1 papillary thyroid carcinoma.

The doctor also said Sanders will need to undergo further treatment. "While she will need adjuvant treatment with radioactive iodine, as well as continued long-term follow-up, I think it's fair to say she's now cancer free, and I don't anticipate any of this slowing her down," Sims said reassuringly.

Sanders is the odds-on favorite to win the Arkansas governor's race in the deep-red state come November, NPR reported. The 40-year-old Republican made a name for herself as Trump's press secretary but has become a political powerhouse in her own right.

It seems Sander is on the mend, but a cancer diagnosis is always serious. Our prayers are with her.
