President Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election by hiding in his basement and speaking very little. Perhaps his handlers are trying the same strategy to keep him in the White House.
Fox News contributor Karl Rove said the truth about Biden’s mysterious absence from the public eye is that the White House is “protecting” Biden’s approval ratings by keeping him away from the press, Fox News reported. Six weeks into his administration, Biden has yet to hold a formal press conference.
Rove, formerly the senior advisor and deputy chief of staff during the George W. Bush administration, made his remarks on “Outnumbered” Thursday. “I think his ratings are likely to be going down more because people are looking at the COVID relief bill and saying, what’s all that pork in there about?” he said. “Maybe it’s that they haven’t heard from them … I think the White House view is if they do hear from the president, it might go down a little bit more,” Rove speculated.
“They wisely made a decision that let the focus remain on Donald Trump,” he continued, “hide Joe Biden in the basement in Delaware. And it worked,” Rove added. “I think they’ve seen since the campaign ended that he’s not good at the end of the day and he’s not really good on his feet,” he said. “And they may be protecting him, hoping to stave off a further decline in his numbers.”
It’s not just Biden’s lack of a press conference that caused speculation. Following a scripted briefing on COVID-19 relief measures and vaccine distribution update, Biden appeared to have been cut off despite offering to take questions. “I’d be happy to take questions if that’s what I’m supposed to do, Nance,” Biden told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was present for the briefing. “Whatever you want me to do,” he said seconds before the feed faded into the White House logo screen.

This long delay in a formal press conference from a modern president is unprecedented. According to The Hill, both former President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama gave news conferences well within their first month in office.
It’s also unusual that Biden isn’t in front of the American people more given that the coronavirus pandemic is still a looming crisis and a massive relief package is still working its way through Congress. Obama was making speeches to convince the nation of the merits of his American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are nowhere to be seen.
The reason Biden has made it so far in the campaign and presidency is because of his ability to hide without the media calling him out on it. The more he hides away, and the more the media cover for him, the easier it is to keep the American people in the dark about what a disaster he is. Let’s see if they can keep it up for four years.
