Ron DeSantis shuts down 'GOP civil war' talk

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) just told those people who have been talking about a "GOP civil war" to "chill out," Fox News reports

DeSantis was asked about the Republican infighting that has been taking place during a press conference that he held on Wednesday.

The infighting has followed the Republicans' less-than-spectacular performance in the midterm elections. This has led to disputes among Republicans about the cause of this lackluster performance, as well as disputes about who ought to be leading the Republican Party.

DeSantis, though, on Wednesday, was having none of it.

"We just finished this election, OK? People just need to chill out a little bit on some of this stuff. I mean, seriously, we just ran an election," DeSantis said.

This press conference was held the day after former President Donald Trump officially announced his 2024 campaign for the U.S. presidency. DeSantis is considered Trump's top Republican rival, particularly after the successful midterm elections that DeSantis and his fellow Florida Republicans had.

Naturally, reporters at the press conference were trying to get DeSantis to talk about the potential 2024 matchup with Trump, especially in light of recent attacks that Trump made on DeSantis. But, DeSantis refused to play the game.

Instead, the Florida governor argued that Republicans ought to be focused on the upcoming U.S. Senate runoff election between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Republican Herschel Walker.

"We have this Georgia runoff coming, which is very important for Republicans to win that Georgia runoff," DeSantis said.

A victory by Walker would keep the balance of power in the Senate the same as it has been over the past couple of years: 50 to 50, with the tie-breaking vote going to Vice President Kamala Harris. A victory by Warnock, however, would mean that the Senate Democrats no longer need that tie-breaking vote.

DeSantis finished off his response to the GOP infighting question by focusing on his plans for Florida.

"What the election gives us the opportunity to do is to continue to deliver," DeSantis said. "And so, we're going to continue to deliver: we're not going to look back, and I think that that's very, very significant."
