Ron DeSantis endorses a change of leadership for Republican National Committee

Gov. Ron DeSantis believes the Republican National Committee needs a regime change as it prepares to choose a new leader, the Daily Caller reported. The Florida Republican cited the dismal GOP performance as his reasoning in an interview Thursday.

"We’ve had three substandard election cycles in a row, ‘18, ‘20, and ‘22, and I would say of all of those ‘22 was probably the worst," DeSantis said during an interview with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. "Given, the political environment of a very unpopular President Biden, huge majorities of the people think the country’s going in the wrong direction," he said.

"That is an environment that’s tailor-made to make big gains in the house and the Senate and state house – state houses all across the country," DeSantis pointed out. "And yet that didn’t happen and in fact, we even lost ground in the U.S. Senate, and so you know, I think we need a change," he added.

The current RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel called the midterms on Nov. 9 "a great night" despite disappointing returns. The GOP lost a Senate seat and only gained 10 seats in the House of Representatives.

Predictions of a so-called "red wave" never materialized, and some losses were utterly embarrassing upsets. One such contest was for Senate in Pennsylvania that went to Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who suffered a major stroke and could barely make it through a debate, who bested Republican Dr. Mehment Oz.

This all happened under McDaniel's watch, a fact that has not gone unnoticed.  A Trafalgar poll taken Jan. 11 reported only 14% wanted her to have a fourth term, and DeSantis seemed to tap into that sentiment.

"I think we need to get some new blood at the RNC. I like what Harmeet Dhillon has said about getting the RNC out of DC," DeSantis said.

The governor was referring to Dhillon and her bid to unseat McDaniel as RNC chair, The Hill reported. Dhillon is an attorney and once served as a campaign adviser for former President Donald Trump.

"Why would you want to have your headquarters in the most Democrat city in America? It’s more Democrat than San Francisco is," DeSantis added.

Reporters asked Dhillon about the remarks DeSantis made, and she was pleased. "I don’t know if I would call it an endorsement," but "it’s gratifying to see leaders in our party listening to the grassroots," she said.

"What I like about what Gov. DeSantis said today is it was really grassroots-oriented, and it really focused on what people are saying in the country," Dhillon added. DeSantis has become a prominent figure in the Republican Party following his landslide victory for re-election as Flordia governor, Fox News reported.

Having his blessing could mean a great deal as the GOP looks to the future. DeSantis has already courted some of the Party's biggest donors, though he still contends he has no intention of running for president in 2024.

Still, it appears DeSantis is heading up the movement for a shift in strategy and leadership at the RNC. The 168 members were expected to cast their votes Friday in a race that included challenger and MyPillow magnate Mike Lindell.

There was no reason the Republican Party should have lost ground in the 2022 midterm elections against unpopular Democrats. DeSantis is correct that the RNC must change its strategy and certainly its leadership to remain competitive.
