Ron DeSantis demands investigation into Disney deal that undermined state's actions

After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis clobbered Disney after it took a bizarre woke political position, the company began working to undermine the state's takeover of the piece of land that basically makes Disney World its own entity.

According to the Washington Examiner, the former Reedy Creek Improvement District board, which made a deal with Disney to skirt the state's move against it, will now be the subject of investigation.

The Examiner noted:

The letter from DeSantis requests the investigation look for any "any legal or ethical violations" by the board in relation to their conduct before the state takeover of the district.

Going by the details of the letter, DeSantis isn't holding anything back in the investigation against the entity.

Representatives for the popular Florida governor said Disney is "again fighting to keep its special corporate benefits and dodge Florida law," adding that DeSantis "won't let that happen."

The Examiner noted that the focus of the investigation will be on "adherence to applicable Florida civil and criminal laws and ethics requirements," the qualifications of the board members, the "involvement of Walt Disney World employees and agents" in the actions of the district, and "any financial gain or benefit derived by Walt Disney World" as result of the work of the district.

The notice of the investigation came on the heels of Attorney General Ashley Moody requesting records from the Reedy Creek board members.

At issue was the deal made between Disney and the Reedy Creek board before the new Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, effectively stripping the oversight board of its power in that matter.

Reedy Creek is a special district located in central Florida that was created in 1967 by the state legislature at the request of the Walt Disney Company. The district was formed to provide Disney World with a high degree of autonomy and control over the land on which the entertainment complex was to be built.

The district is named after the Reedy Creek, a small stream that flows through the area.

Reedy Creek provided Disney World with a high degree of independence and control over its operations. The district is responsible for providing many of the essential services that Disney World requires to function, such as water and sewer services, fire protection, and emergency medical services.

Additionally, Reedy Creek has its own government, which is composed of a board of supervisors appointed by Disney and elected by property owners within the district.

It looks like the ongoing saga between the state and Reedy Creek/Disney is far from over.
