Republicans ready to approve Russian oil ban, waiting on Democrats and President Biden

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of relenting. Though there are no U.S. forces on the ground yet, lawmakers suggest hindering Russia’s war effort is partly achievable if America stops importing its crude oil.

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) said that Republicans are prepared to pass a bill banning the import of Russian oil to take a bite out of President Vladimir Putin’s economy, Breitbart reported. Stuebe called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to get it done on “Fox & Friends First” on Friday.

During her weekly briefing Thursday, Pelosi suggested she was in favor of banning Russian oil imports, the New York Post reported. “I’m all for that… ban the oil coming from Russia,” she said.

“Well, let’s do it,” Steube said about the measure. “I mean, I don’t care how he responds now. Let’s send him a bill,” Steube said of passing legislation for President Joe Biden to sign.

“I mean, if Pelosi’s now saying that we’re going to ban Russian oil, there’s been a number of Republicans that I’ve cosponsored that would do just that,” he continued. The measure currently has bipartisan support, but the White House has been reluctant to completely outlaw Russian oil imports though a bill could force his hand, ABC News reported.

“We’ll be in Washington on Monday,” Stuebe later said. “If [Pelosi] really feels strongly about it and it’s not just words and she does intend on doing it, let’s have a bill, on Monday evening, when we’re all up there, and let’s vote to do it, send that bill to the Senate,” he urged.

“If Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats are willing to support it and it passes the House and the Senate, put it on Biden’s desk and see what he does then,” Steube challenged. “You know, he says in the State of the Union, America first, we’re going to promote American products, put your money where your mouth is on oil and gas.”

There is a push to ban all sorts of Russian products while others are doing things like dumping Russian vodka already purchased. This is all symbolic and doesn’t do much for the cause — but banning Russian oil.
