Rep. Nick Kustoff (R-TN) said on Wednesday in a Breitbart News interview that special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry should be removed from the White House if reports of the former secretary of state leaking classified information to Iran are true.
Kerry allegedly leaked classified information to Iran that Israel carried out at least 200 covert strikes against Iranian targets, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
The New York Times first reported the accusations. Multiple Republican leaders have now called for an investigation, with Kustoff and others calling for Kerry’s removal if the accusations are confirmed.
Kustoff told Breitbart News, “We have to assume — based on the position that [Kerry’s] got [and] his prior service in government — that he has access, at some level, to classified information. We know that — not only with the allegations of this audio tape, but throughout the course of his public service — John Kerry has loose lips.
“Not only from a political standpoint, but certainly from a best interest standpoint, Biden ought to ask him to step down and serve his retirement,” Kustoff added.
Sen. Ted Cruz (D-TX) also commented on the allegations against Kerry. “These allegations are deeply concerning, Iran’s foreign minister on tape alleged that Kerry told him that Israel carried out over 200 military strikes on Iranian forces in Syria,” according to Breitbart News.
He added, “If that is true, it is criminal. It is disclosing serious, sensitive, classified information about one of America’s closest allies, the nation of Israel” to a “dangerous enemy of America and enemy of Israel. The caveat, if it’s true, is important.” h
The White House has not commented on the accusations against Kerry so far. White House press secretary Jen Psaki responded on Monday, “We’re not going to comment on leaked tapes.”
