Racial activists have muddied the waters when it comes to calling out claims of racism. Unfortunately, there are still real examples to be found in high places.
David Dietrich resigned from his post as chairman of the Electoral Board in Hampton Saturday over social media posts calling for the “lynching” of prominent black officials, The Hill reported. Dietrich made the posts in February 2021 about retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Hampton’s Republican Party called Dietrich’s post “abhorrent and unacceptable racist language” in a Facebook message that included screenshots of the offending post. Dietrich had made these comments following the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, calling Austin’s decision to root out so-called extremism in the military as an attempt to “remove conservative, freedom-loving Americans” from the armed services.
The election official also took offense with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s appointment of Honoré, whom she charged with investigating security breaches that allowed protestors to enter the building. He posted that “a good public lynching” was in order and called the men N-words.
The response from the Pentagon came through press secretary John Kirby when he was asked about it Tuesday. “Even in light of those truly irresponsible, mean-spirited, indeed, wicked comments, [Austin is] going to be focused on leading the department forward and trying to continue to set an example going forward,” Kirby said.
“That’s where his head is,” Kirby added Tuesday. “No matter who you are … where you came from, what your background is, he believes that if you’re qualified and you want to serve this country, you should be able to do it,” he said of Austin’s reaction.
“And you’ll be able to do it without fear of discrimination or harassment,” Kirby continued. “In his view, there’s no place in the Department of Defense for comments like that, for the actions that come from comments like that.”
Racism is a disgusting and sinful worldview that has no place in society. It’s even more despicable when it comes from a public figure in government office.
