Republican Governor sounds off on Trump’s riot response, says it’s ‘not helpful’

Republican Governor of Maryland Larry Hogan betrayed President Trump in a CNN interview on Sunday, attacking the way Trump has responded to the violent protests breaking out all over the nation.

“I think one of the most important things that a leader can do right now, and I went through this in 2015 during the riots in Baltimore, one of my primary focuses was to try to lower the temperature,” Hogan told host Jake Tapper.

Amid the devastating violence perpetrated by rioters across the nation, Trump tweeted that the “THUGS” initiating the violence were “dishonoring the memory of George Floyd.”

Hogan criticized the tweet, saying that it’s “not helpful,” continuing to say that “it’s not lowering the temperature. It’s sort of continuing to escalate the rhetoric. I think it’s just the opposite of the message that should have been coming out of the White House.

Hogan pointed to his experience with the 2015 Baltimore riots, saying that “our theory was peace through strength,” crowing that officials “successfully” stopped the localized violence in “a few hours.”

Fox News reported on Saturday that 5,000 National Guard troops have been deployed across 15 states in response to the rapidly escalating violence that broke out earlier this week. Protests are said to be planned for the next several weeks.

Trump issued a statement on Saturday calling for justice for George Floyd while also condemning the out-of-control riots. Floyd’s death “filled America all over the country with horror, anger and grief,” Trump said, remarking that he had met with Floyd’s family to express “the sorrow of our entire nation for their loss.”

“I stand before you as a friend and ally of every American seeking justice and peace,” Trump continued, continuing on to call for an end to the violence. “What we are seeing on the streets of our cities has nothing to do with justice or peace. The memory of Floyd is being dishonored by rioters, looters, and anarchists.”

  1. President Trump is a breath of fresh air. They are thugs. Why did MD governor Hogan let them enter ‘his’ state? Most are not residents. If Hogan is so wonderful at taking care of MD why is he not stopping the riots by the THUGS?

    1. I agree with President Trump. It is a dishonor to George Floyd to address the protest with violence. Those creating violence are probably far-left Democrat socialist who would love nothing more than to continue to try to make President Trump look bad. They are not satisfied and will stop at nothing to try to dissuade people from voting for Trump in November. I think by now the American people have a handle on what the Democrats and socialists are trying to do. Keep up the good work President Trump we the people are behind you. God bless you and our country.

    1. Agree -shoot the looters and anyone who tries to resist arrest. Patting these criminals on the head and begging them to be peaceful is absurd – they will laugh at it.

      1. Agree!!!! Arrest them, put them in jail & put them on a “word detail” (better word, “chain gang”), under supervision & have them clean up the messes in all our great cities, which they created!!!! Clean ups often shows some respect for which they seem to have no regard —- private properties, businesses; which were already hurting from closures of Coronavirus. They also need to pay for all the looting they did!!! People/elected officials appear to “coddle” & “pamper” these crooks (I like President Trumps term of Thugs!), so therefore, they think they are just allowed to destruct, without consequences. They also had no respect for George Floyd!!! I feel, he would not have approved of all their actions.

  2. Not all Marylanders agree with RINO Hogan–talk about disrespect what about the disrespect Hogan showed the nation by snubbing our President’s visit to Ft. McHenry–I am ashamed to think he is so whimpy as to pander to the lest !!!

  3. Hogan needs to stfu! When there is unrest it doesn’t help matter’s when politician’s go against the President. Hogan talks about 2015 well in my opinion all he did was leave mstters on the back burner ready to heat up to the max. Leave things be Hogan and everyone else who want’s to add their negative 2cents worth. You didn’t fix things but now Trump will and that’s a fact! DJT 2020 4 more years and he will get youalls mess cleaned up! ! !

  4. The problem is they are letting criminals out of jail at present and there is no fear
to be put in jail at the present time. We should put these criminals on work details
cleaning up the streets and garbage or they would be assigned to prison duties with
    no benefits.

  5. Time to mobilize the militia, put armed volunteers in every building around the protest sight to deter vandalism.
The time has come for the citizen to step up and protect there community. Law enforcement and the guard can not do it alone.
Mayor and Governors , call on the citizens to help restore order. These people doing the out of control riots, Distruction, looting ,and burning buildings, will leave when they no longer can promote violence.

  6. RHINOS ALL OVER CANNOT STAND TRUMP. BECAUSE TRUMP IS A REAL MAN OF ACTION. DEMOCRATS ARE JUST PUPPETS, FOUL MOUTHED AND BACKHANDED.
TRUMP WILL WIN 2020. POOR HILLARY , WHAT A DISGUSTING LOOSER, SHE DOES NOT REALIZE HER TIME IS OVER. NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR FROM HER. SHE IS DONE, FOREVER.
VERY SAD PEOPLE, WISH THEY ALL WOULD JUST SHUT UP.

  7. yea. everybody has an opinion and the President takes the blame when it SCREWS UP. IN MY OPINION ALL THIS GOT HAYWIRE WHEN OBAMA WAS PRESIDENT AND PROMISED TO DO GREAT THINGS FOR HIS BROTHERS. DID NOT HAPPEN. HE ONLY DID FOR HIMSELF. EXAMPLE SET. BROTHERS WILL NOT BE FOOLED AGAIN. BUT WHAT HAPPENS IS GROUPS FORM AND WANT TO PENETRATE THE RIOT AND SOON THEY ARE RUNNING IT AND THE BROTHERS ARE NOT IN CHARGE ANYLONGER BUT THIS MONEYMAN SOROS IS PAYING FOR POWER AGAIN SO NOW EVERYTHING IS OFF RAIL AND FELONIES HAVE BEEN COMMITTED AND THE WHOEVPURPOSEis lost baby lost. wake up brothers. quite letting this happen

  8. I think everyone here that has spoken about this issue comes from the heart and should be praised for these comments yes citizens should be involved shout out loudest when you see anyone trying to destroy your community’s hard work protect your people isn’t this why we are Americans help each other.

  9. As a former law enforcement officer, I was appalled by what transpired in Minneapolis. Not just the officer who has now been charged with the death of Mr. Floyd, but also the three officers who stood by and let it happen. All of them should have had stepped forward and ended this immediately. They all to an oath to Serve and Protect the citizens of Minneapolis and that includes George Floyd, even if it was from one of their own. Failure to act, is an action in and of itself, and all three should be charged with accessories in the murder of George Floyd.

To the ‘Peaceful Protestors’ around the country, I support you in heart and mind and none of this should have happened. Since the end of the civil war, this country has failed each and everyone of you. Until all are treated as equals, our constitution means nothing. All men and women, under our laws, are to be treated as equals to each other. It should NEVER matter whether your skin color, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs are different. WE all deserve the same respect, chances and opportunities afforded us by law and humanity. Peace and numbers will eventually win out, many may not march shoulder to shoulder but we are with you nonetheless.

For those who step outside the lines and I am talking to those who firebomb, physically assault others, destroy vehicles and businesses, terrorize through riots and destruction. YOU DO NOTHING BUT CREATE FURTHER DISTANCE FOR THE CAUSE. For every step forward for peace, justice and humanity, the actions of these malcontents, and yes I will say it TERRORISTS, brings the every step forward, FIVE STEPS BACK. What does looting a store for flat screen tvs, destroying someone’s livelihood through mass destruction and burning cars and assaulting others do? We all see it on the nightly news and we start to believe the actions of the few is the norm for all. In other words, we come to believe that BLM and others who march are just as bad as the few. The same way the actions of but a few law enforcement officers condemns all.

I know neither of those statements is true, but like it or not, this is how it plays out everyday on the news. But for the action of the few has a counter active stigma on the whole.

I don’t often like the way Trump speaks, as it can often be misconstrued or twisted to make him sound as though he is fanning the flames. But it also doesn’t help when the media shows more of the trash behaving badly and taking away from those who are genuinely trying to make a difference in this country. If they think something Trump said is creating dischord, it doesn’t help for other politicians and to dig, counter or push their own hypocrisy.

The sad truth of it all, is anger is often pointed at the wrong people. In this case, it is justified, and the city and state acted swiftly in the firing and charging in the murder of George Floyd. Is it enough, not yet, but I feel more is coming. This officer probably should have been fired years ago, before this incident. But as I said, don’t press all of your anger towards law enforcement, many are good men and women doing a very tough job enforcing laws. However, it is the politicians and the courts who shoulder alot of the blame as they are the ones creating and justifying the laws we live under, including those laws that unjustly punish minorities and the impoverished. So if you want to make a statement, do it in front of the courthouses, the state assembly buildings and the government offices. Block the streets and sidewalks, make them hear you, make them see you and make them sit down with you to truly make changes to make everyone equal.

  10. My heart hurts for those who’s homes and lives have been demolished. Why are people listening to those fear mongers? It is not the people of those cities looting and rioting, it’s terrorists. Organizations are busing these people in to destroy and fake media is egging them in with their fake sympathy. The only racist in America are on CNN, MSNBC & all those other media organizations that belittle blacks & other minorities by saying they aren’t capable of building a better life for themselves. They want to keep people beholden to the system so politicians can maintain their gravy train. My brother sent me a message that applies to those of their ilk, “having trouble winning the lottery? Run for Congress”.

  11. Wonderful blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything.

Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out
there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any ideas? Many thanks!
