Republican consultants forced to choose between McCarthy and Cheney as midterms heat up

Political consultants working with Republicans in Washington D.C. are reportedly taking sides, choosing to work with either House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) or Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).

According to Breitbart News, changes are brewing in the GOP ranks as midterms start to heat up and the strategists and support staffs that make the modern elections into the well-oiled machines that they have become are being forced to choose whether to side with or against those candidates who support former President Donald Trump.

Longtime Washington lobbyist Jeff Miller has landed on the side of Trump, due to his close relationship with McCarthy, and is reportedly urging other consultants in his field to choose between working with McCarthy or Cheney, according to a report in The New York Times.

Miller is supposedly telling lobbyists that it’s “us-or-her” when it comes to Cheney’s divisive decisions over the past months, and Breitbart reported that at least one of Cheney’s fundraising firms has already distanced itself from the Wyoming Republican.

The Morning Group was hired by Cheney to help fund her campaign, which is up against a number of challenges, and one in particular who is endorsed by Trump, but they have officially backed away from working with the former vice president’s daughter.

“It’s sad but not surprising that Kevin McCarthy is continuing down the morally bankrupt path of embracing House Republicans who are white supremacists and conspiracy theorists,” Jeremy Adler, a spokesman for Cheney, said. “But attacking Liz Cheney for telling the truth and standing for the Constitution.”

The falling away may not be altogether unmerited, however, considering that Cheney has made it clear she does not support McCarthy, which could cause problems for the minority leader, should Republicans regain the majority in the House of Representatives in 2022.

Cheney became part of the headlines when she sided with House Democrats to impeach Trump, and again when she accepted a position from house Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to sit on her January 6 select committee, despite McCarthy’s announcement that there would be no support from Republicans.

“She’s not just undermining Kevin but the whole G.O.P. conference,” Miller said of Cheney during an interview. “You’re either with Kevin, and the conference, or the person undermining them. You can’t serve two masters.”
