Leftists scoffed at the idea that former President Donald Trump would maintain influence in the party. It turns out they had it all wrong.
Clark County, Nevada, Sheriff Lombardo is surging in the polls after Trump endorsed him as Nevada’s Republican gubernatorial candidate, Breitbart reported. A Nevada Independent poll found 35% support for Lombard compared to 15% for his closest competitor Joey Gilbert.
In April, Trump gave his blessing to Lombardo in the governor’s race. Trump touted his military service and said Lombardo would “fiercely Protect our under-siege Second Amendment, Oppose Sanctuary Cities, Support our Law Enforcement, Veto any Liberal Tax Increase, Protect Life, and Secure our Elections.”
However, the Nevada Republican Party has supported Gilbert. This tone-deafness is especially egregious in a state where 43% of GOP voters see themselves first as Trump supporters compared to 42% whose primary identity is with the party.
Perhaps that’s why Nevada Independent’s chief of research Mike Noble called Trump’s backing “the most impactful endorsement a Republican candidate can receive in a primary election right now.” He identified Lombardo as the “clear favorite” in the primary even without the backing of the state’s GOP.
“Anything can happen from now until Election Day, however, a lot has to go wrong for Lombardo, and a lot has to go right for his opponents to catch him at this stage of the race,” Noble added. The Republican will take place June 14, but early voting begins May 28.
Candidates that Trump endorsed have fared very well in their respective races, according to Business Insider. In fact, those in tight races ended up with an average of 63.5% of the vote.
Establishment Republicans have tried to distance themselves from the former president and his agenda since Trump lost in 2020. However, it’s clear that voters still see Trump as a leader and primary force in the GOP — and the establishment better get on board for the sake of the party.
