Republican Ashley Hinson admitted to hospital with kidney infection

A prominent Republican is doing battle for reelection. Unfortunately, she's also in a fight for her health.

Republican Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson was admitted to the hospital with a kidney infection Sunday, the Daily Caller reported. This came just a day after she was on the campaign trail with prominent Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz.

"Congresswoman Hinson was admitted to UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital yesterday evening where she is being treated for a kidney infection," Jimmy Peacock, her chief of staff, said Sunday. "She is looking forward to being back on the road soon."

"She appreciates all of the prayers and well wishes," Peacock added. Hinson was released Tuesday to continue her recovery at home, The Gazette reported.

"I am grateful to everyone who has sent thoughts and prayers over the last few days," Hinson said after leaving the hospital. "The doctors and nurses at UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital have been incredible, and I want to thank each of them for their exceptional care," she later added.

Hinson is running for reelection against incumbent Democrat Sen. Liz Mathis. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has targeted this race for the 2nd Congressional District as one in its "Red to Blue" campaigns, funneling money and support.

"Red to Blue is a highly competitive and tested program at the DCCC that equips top-tier candidates with organizational and fundraising support to help them continue to run strong campaigns," the website explained. "Come November, these candidates and others will take on House Republicans across the country — and fight to flip these seats from Red to Blue."

Prior to her illness, Hinson enjoyed her status as a candidate on the rise to prominence in the House Republican Conference. She has been successful in fundraising and mulled a run for conference chair until New York Rep. Elise Stefanik opted to stay for another term.

Kidney infections can be serious, and the demands of campaigning can exacerbate such conditions. However, the 39-year-old seems to be on the mend, but prayers are important nonetheless.
