Representative Ted Budd leading in North Carolina Senate primary with Trump endorsement

Many mainstream Republicans keep a distance from former President Donald Trump because he’s supposedly so divisive. However, one GOP candidate is demonstrating just how fruitful an alliance with Trump can be.

After Trump’s endorsement, Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) is leading in his state’s Republican Senate primary, Breitbart reported. Trump had endorsed Budd in July in the battleground state.

The Vitale and Associates poll conducted last week among likely voters has Budd in the lead with 32% of the vote. Former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory trails him at 29%, with former Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) polling at only 12 percent.

“We strongly encourage evangelical, Catholic, and Republican voters to focus on these critical races in the May primary, and to vote for candidates who will support human life, allow marriage and families to flourish, and protect our religious liberty,” Tami Fitzgerald, executive director for the North Carolina Values Coalition which commissioned the poll, said. “And, judges will have a greater impact on issues that matter to religious voters than almost any other elected official in North Carolina.”

Budd experienced a major bump in enthusiasm following Trump’s endorsement in July, Fox News reported. Trump was the keynote speaker at the North Carolina GOP convention and gave his support to Budd following the announcement that his daughter, Lara Trump, would not run for the seat.

“Immediately thereafter people were sending in donations. I think it clarified things,” Budd credited the former president.

Still, many in the GOP have seen Trump as a liability since day one and have sought to distance themselves from him and his policies. At least half of the Republican governors up for re-election are seeking to do just that head of the 2022 races, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Budd has proven that Trump can still deliver voters despite the perception that the former president is toxic to candidates. The political elites have never understood the former president or the bond he has with his voters — and it seems they never will.
