Representative Jamie Raskin diagnosed with cancer

Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the January 6 select committee, revealed that he has a "serious but curable" cancer, Breitbart reported. The 60-year-old Maryland Democrat made the announcement Wednesday.

Testing uncovered diffuse large B cell lymphoma for Raskin, who was about to become the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee. The cancer is a non-Hodgkins type that will require aggressive treatment to begin soon.

"I am about to embark on a course of chemo-immunotherapy on an outpatient basis at Med Star Georgetown University Hospital and Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center," Raskin said in his announcement. "Prognosis for most people in my situation is excellent after four months of treatment."

Raskin said he would continue serving in Congress during his treatment. "I expect to be able to work through this period but have been cautioned by my doctors to reduce unnecessary exposure to avoid COVID-19, the flu and other viruses," he said.

"In addition to destroying cancer cells, chemotherapy impairs natural antibodies and undermines the body’s immune system," Raskin noted. "I am advised that it also causes hair loss and weight gain (although I am still holding out hope for the kind that causes hair gain and weight loss)," he quipped.

After his announcement, Raskin received a surprising outpouring of support from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. "We disagree often, but I’ll be praying for Jamie Raskin," the Georgia Republican tweeted.

"Cancer is a terrible disease. I watched my father die from it, and it broke my heart," she added.

"It’s good Rep Raskin has hope and his form of cancer is curable with the treatment he will be starting," Greene said. Raskin and Greene are adversaries because of his role on the January 6 committee.

Mostly comprised of Democrats, the committee's sole purpose seems to be mining political gold from the incursion at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Raskin has essentially carved out a career by going after former President Donald Trump.

The Maryland Democrat joined the House of Representatives in 2017, making him a relative newcomer just as Trump was sworn in as president. However, Raskin made a name for himself as lead impeachment manager during Trump's second impeachment.

With the GOP now set to take over the House of Representatives next month, Raskin is situated as a bulwark against the coming onslaught of probes against Democrats. Republicans in the oversight committee are planning to investigate Hunter Biden, president Joe Biden's son, for his shady overseas deals.

He will now have to juggle his treatment and recovery with his pursuit of the GOP. Unfortunately, Raskin is no stranger to personal tragedy while serving in office.

In December 2020, Raskin's 25-year-old son committed suicide. At the time, the lawmaker said it was the result of a "blindingly painful and merciless disease called depression."

Still, cancer is a formidable enemy. It seems Raskin has a great prognosis for a full recovery, and that matters more than anyone's political affiliation.
