Democrats often don’t want to play by the rules when it comes to cramming legislation through. At least this time, the Republicans were able to beat them at their own game.
House Republicans were able to thwart two of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s radical bills, Breitbart reported. Pelosi was attempting to use a procedural loophole to pass two controversial pieces of legislation — but her plans were thwarted by GOP lawmakers.
One of the bills, the LGBTQ Business Equal Credit Enforcement and Investment Act, would give lending preference to LGBTQ-owned businesses. The other, the Equal Access to Contraception for Veterans Act, would compel the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide abortion drugs funded by the government.
Republicans in the Freedom Caucus were able to rally enough support to overcome the Democrats’ majority in the House. “That’s stunning,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, told the news outlet in an interview.
“What the deal is on these suspension bills, they have to get two-thirds to get them across the line,” Biggs explained. “The significance of taking down the suspension votes is that the Democrats are trying to change all the rules and traditions of the House and force all of their agenda even if it’s not radical — but the radical parts and the non-radical parts — they’re trying to force it down our throats,” he said.
“Our position has always been that that is — it is that we have to fight on every issue,” Biggs promised. “That’s why we ask for roll call votes on the suspension votes because we want transparency for the American public number one, and number two we want everybody to be recorded on how you vote, and number three we want to put the speed stick down. That’s what that’s been all about.”
Both bills received majority support, but not enough of a margin to pass. The result for the LGBTQ bill was 248-177 while the abortion bill was 240-188, with two members abstaining.
Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) championed the win for the Caucus. “The failure of these bills shows that the Freedom Caucus strategy to fight the Democratic majority using all the procedure at their disposal is working,” he said. “Combined with members willing to fight for principle, it worked to knock down two Democratic bills last night.
This was a blow to the Biden-Harris agenda, though continued vigilance is necessary to keep it that way. The radicals on the left are intent on ramming through whatever legislation they can in any way they can — and only Republicans with backbone can stop it.
