Texas Republican Rep. Michael McCaul said during a “Fox News Sunday” interview that the Taliban is holding American citizens and in a “hostage” situation.
“We have six airplanes at Mazar Sharif Airport, six airplanes with American citizens on them as I speak, also with these interpreters, and the Taliban is holding them hostage for demands right now,” McCaul said on Sunday.
“They — we — the state has cleared these flights and the Taliban will not let them leave the airport,” he added.
Host Chris Wallace was surprised and asked for more detail on the situation.
“We know the reason why is because the Taliban want something in exchange. This is really, Chris, turning into a hostage situation where they’re not going to allow American citizens to leave until they get full recognition from the United States of America,” McCaul explained.

The growing tension also revealed President Joe Biden and the State Department do not plan to be intervening on behalf of trapped Americans. If so, the inaction is worse than the administration’s failed actions in leaving Afghanistan.
