House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has an uphill battle. Many signs are beginning to show that the 2022 midterm elections may not be kind to Democrats — especially considering the mess President Joe Biden has made only months into his term.
Many factors are converging that point to a Republican takeback of Congress in the 2022 midterms, NBC News reported. Retirements in key districts, a fundraising boon for Republicans, and the usual challenge of being the party in power may spell trouble for Pelosi’s majority.
Pelosi only has a 220-212 edge in the House, leaving little wiggle room. With several lawmakers announcing retirements or departures for higher office, that majority is in trouble even before considering other factors.
“Based on all factors, you’d have to consider Republicans the early favorites for the House majority in 2022,” David Wasserman, Senior Editor of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, observed. “But as we found out in 2020, surprises can happen, and it’s not a done deal,” he said.
“Democrats’ best hope is that Biden’s approval rating stays above 50 percent and that Republicans have a tougher time turning out their voters without Trump on the ballot,” Wasserman said early this month. That could be a problem considering Biden’s habit of wrecking everything he touches.
Like former President Barack Obama, Biden’s approval has recently taken a hit despite riding high initially, according to the Washington Post. Even so, the recent debacle in Afghanistan, where a swift withdrawal has led to a Taliban takeover of hard-won territory, has yet to show up extensively in polling.
The two polls that were conducted as Kabul was retaken by the Taliban indicate Biden is already in trouble, however. “Those polls — the GOP-leaning Rasmussen Report and the Economist/YouGov weekly survey — show Biden’s net favorability at negative eight and even, respectively,” the news outlet reported.
Pelosi will have to overcome so much with so many departures and money being funneled into Republican war chests. However, Democrats’ biggest liability is the man in the White House — and all indications are that it will only get worse.
