In an outrageous display of disrespect and ingratitude to those who gave their lives in service of this country, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) this week prevented her Republican colleagues from reading aloud on the chamber floor the names of the 13 military members killed amid the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, as the Daily Wire reports.
Himself a wounded veteran who served in Afghanistan, Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) recounted exactly what occurred when GOP lawmakers attempted to pay tribute to the fallen.
“We gaveled in, had a prayer, said the Pledge of Allegiance, took a moment of silence with pretty much all Republican veterans, then asked to be recognized to read names and bring up Afghanistan legislation,” Mast explained, then lamenting, “they did not acknowledge us, and just closed the House down.”
Republican Rep. Greg Steube (FL) opined on Twitter that the entire episode was a disgrace and that Democrats’ unwillingness to allow a reading of the service members’ names was a clear indication of “how far our nation has fallen.”
The Daily Wire futher noted that fellow Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez portrayed the move as part of a larger attempt on the part of the left to “cover up this Afghanistan debacle,” perhaps in hopes that the American electorate will quickly forget the tragic scenes from Kabul and move on to something else.
This is certainly not the first time in recent days that prominent Democrats have been accused of egregious insensitivity when it comes to those lost last week in Afghanistan, as no less than President Joe Biden has courted controversy over the manner in which he has conducted himself in front of their grieving families.
During a solemn ceremony at which the remains of the deceased service members were returned to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, Biden was seen cavalierly checking his wristwatch as the flag-draped coffins were brought into view, as the New York Post reported.
Reaction to Biden’s behavior was swift and damning, with former White House physician-turned-Congressman Ronny Jackson (R-TX) saying, “Apparently our Commander-in-Chief has better things to do than honor the 13 service members who died on his watch? I’m DISGUSTED! God bless these heroes and their loved ones. They deserved better.”
Furthermore, according to the family of late Marine Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum, a meeting between Biden and McCollum’s pregnant widow was “hollow and lacking meaning,” as the president seemed more focused on recounting the loss of his own son to brain cancer while also displaying a “total disregard to the loss of [their] Marine.” To paraphrase Rep. Jackson, disgusting, indeed.
