Though purportedly the Biden administration’s go-to problem solver for addressing the migrant crisis at the country’s southern border, new reporting suggests that Vice President Kamala Harris has maintained a shockingly hands-off approach to her duties as a way to sidestep the considerable political landmines involved, as Breitbart notes.
President Joe Biden announced Harris as his point person for the massive, record-breaking influx of undocumented arrivals back in March, but it became apparent fairly quickly that the vice president was not exactly jumping into the role with both feet, failing to visit the southern border in person and declining to hold a press conference to discuss policy strategies.
Indeed, after Republican legislators and others began asking questions about Harris’ apparent lack of interest in the situation, the White House claimed that the vice president’s focus was not actually on the border itself, but rather on the “root causes” of mass migration and that she would be working “on a diplomatic level” to find solutions.
As Breitbart now reports, however, multiple anonymous sources have told CNN that Harris and her advisors are worried that any connection to the dire scenario at the border will seized upon by the GOP and used to harm her future presidential ambitions.
According to the left-leaning cable outlet, two internal White House officials explained that Harris prefers to concentrate on conditions in Central American nations that cause migrants to head north rather than tackling the difficulties on the ground at the border – such as overcrowding at detention centers for unaccompanied youth – that members of her own party have called “inhumane” and “barbaric.”
Right from the start, Harris tried to temper expectations regarding her new tasks, clarifying back in March, “Needless to say, the work will not be easy,” and asserting, “It’s not going to be solved overnight; it’s a complex issue. If this were easy, it would have been handled years ago.”
One of the insiders who spoke to CNN stated that the vice president “appears eager for a portfolio that will allow her to achieve political victories, especially in foreign policy, an area where she is far less experienced than Biden. …Harris’ performance is critical to her future political career, which could well include a run for president.”
While Harris’ laissez-faire approach may help keep her hands clean in the short term, her deliberate inattention to the growing dilemma has not escaped critical attention even from certain Democrats, including Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar, who said Thursday, “All I’ve been asking, this administration….is to listen to the people that live on the border” and implored Biden and Harris to visit and see for themselves what their policies have wrought.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was rather edgier in his assessment of Harris’ inaction, tweeting a Monty Python clip in which a group of hapless knights flee conflict while shouting, “Run away! Run away!” which he clearly believes illustrates her approach to the problem which, unfortunately for the American people, amounts to cynically kicking the can down the road in order to climb the next rung on the political ladder.
