Vice President Kamala Harris was not included in a surprise trip U.S. officials made to Mexico on Tuesday to discuss ways to reduce the number of illegal immigrants crossing America’s southern border.
“Officials underscored the importance of fostering development in southern Mexico and Central America to address the root causes of irregular migration, and will work toward deeper collaboration within the Root Causes Strategy,” the White House readout reported.
“They discussed current irregular migration flows and committed to jointly managing safe, orderly migration that respects human rights,” it added.
According to Breitbart News, “National Security Advisor to the Vice President Amb. Nancy McEldowne was among the U.S. representatives who visited Mexico Tuesday as well as National Security Council’s senior director for the Western Hemisphere, Juan Gonzalez.”
The report added, “Biden’s Special Envoy for the Northern Triangle Department’s Ricardo Zuniga and two other U.S. officials were also there.”
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday, “I have a call today with Vice President Kamala Harris. We are going to give continuity to the agenda that we have in common on migration issues, of course, the issue of opening the border, the support that they have been giving us, and that we thank you very much for having enough vaccines in our country.”
Obrador was concerned about the extension of the COVID-19 closure of the border impacting business. The U.S., however, emphasized giving vaccines to Mexico and Northern Triangle nations.
The odd combination of calls and meetings reveal much is taking place with Mexico outside of the public’s knowledge. This also includes increased efforts without Harris, despite her role as leader to the nation’s immigration response.
