Report identifies seven potential 2024 replacements for Biden

The Hill just published a report identifying "the seven Democrats most likely to run for president," should President Joe Biden choose not to seek reelection in 2024.

Whether Biden will seek reelection in 2024 has been a much-talked-about topic given Biden's age, his lack of popularity, and his lack of success as president. There have been reports and polls that have suggested that a significant number of Democrats would like to see someone else represent their party in 2024.

Biden and the White House have consistently responded to such questions about 2024 by insisting that Biden will be seeking reelection. That was until last weekend.

Biden, during a 60 Minutes interview on CBS News, was asked whether he has made a "firm decision" about 2024.

Biden replied: "Look, my intention, as I said to begin with, is that I would run again. But it's just an intention. But is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen."

Biden, when pressed further, suggested that he would make a final decision regarding 2024 after the midterm elections. If Biden doesn't seek reelection, then the big question is who will be the Democrats' next 2024 presidential candidate.

The Hill puts forth seven possibilities: Vice President Kamala Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

The Hill quotes a "top Democratic donor" as saying, "there's not one clear candidate, and there's not a rising star."

One look at that list certainly makes this clear. On the other hand, the Republicans, with either former President Donald Trump or Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), appear to be in much better shape, at least in terms of candidate quality, heading into 2024.
