The House Freedom Caucus sent a letter Thursday to Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to investigate whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) consulted them before extending House mask mandates and social distance protocols.
“Did the Speaker of the House, or the Attending Physician of the House, consult with you, or anyone else at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prior to her decision on May 14, 2021 to extend the mask mandate and social distancing protocols on the House floor?” the letter asked.
“In your own words, ‘If you are fully vaccinated, you are protected, and you can start doing the things that you stopped doing because of the pandemic,’” the letter added.
The letter’s signer, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs, asked, ““While Speaker Pelosi insists we follow the science and CDC guidelines, she continues running the House as if she is unaware of the science. So our ask is simple, has Pelosi consulted with the CDC or is she purely playing politics?” according to a Daily Caller report.
The report noted 34 Republican House leaders supported the letter. The GOP leaders have challenged Pelosi to return to pre-pandemic, in-person voting and an end to mask requirements.
Congressional leaders have grown increasingly angry over the seemingly conflicting information. Pelosi has charged multiple House members fines of $500 per occurrence for not wearing a mask to House floor meetings.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene(R-GA) posted a video of herself on May 19 that showed her running Pelosi’s mask mandate rules through a paper shredder.
