Report: GOP looks ahead to possible post-midterm Biden impeachment

The upcoming midterm elections have the potential to effect significant change in the nation's capital, and according to The Hill, should Republicans reclaim the House of Representatives, the impeachment of President Joe Biden could well rise to the top of their priority list.

As the outlet noted, one GOP lawmaker who is particularly keen to explore the possibility of impeachment is Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, who believes the issue should be raised as soon as his party retakes control of the lower chamber.

"I have consistently said President Biden should be impeached for intentionally opening our border and making Americans less safe," Good declared. "Congress has a duty to hold the president accountable for this and any other failures of his constitutional responsibilities, so a new Republican majority must be prepared to aggressively conduct oversight on day one."

Notably, a number of impeachment resolutions have already been introduced since Biden took office, on issues ranging from the border crisis to the catastrophic American troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, but with Democrats in control of both the House and Senate, they were destined to go nowhere.

While Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) – a likely candidate to seize the speaker's gavel should his party prevail in November – has attempted to strike a careful balance between moderate Republicans and GOP's base on the question of impeachment, as The Hill added, other leading conservatives have taken a different line altogether.

In March of this year, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), currently the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, made clear that the question of impeachment is "definitely a discussion we need to have," as the Washington Times noted, though he added that "you have to have complete buy-in from the entire [Republican] conference" to take such dramatic action.

Also among the GOP legislators who have argued that impeachment should certainly be on the table are New York Reps. Nicole Malliotakis and Claudia Tenney, who early this year called for precisely such a process when news emerged that secret transport flights full of illegal immigrants were making their way to the country's interior under Biden administration orders.

Last summer, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also suggested that impeachment of the president was in order due to the disastrous, botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying, "I think this is a dereliction of duty at the highest level. I think Joe Biden deserves to be impeached because he's abandoned thousands of Afghans who fought with us." However, whether he would still approve of such a process more than a year after the fact remains unclear.

Left-wing pundits such as blogger Steve Benen, however, have blasted possible impeachment plans as a "partisan fixation" that is "plainly ridiculous," but, as Sen. Ted Cruz has aptly pointed out, Democrats pursued former President Donald Trump's impeachment for far less serious transgressions than Biden has committed, and "[t]he more you weaponize [impeachment] and turn it into a partisan cudgel, you know, what's good for the goose is good for the gander."
