President Joe Biden is reportedly being investigated for stopping billions of dollars in payments to companies involved in the construction of former President Donald Trump’s border wall along the nation’s southern border.
“Now the Government Accountability Office is launching a review to determine whether the new president broke the law by freezing the money in violation of budget rules designed to keep Congress in control of the cash flow,” Politico reported.
“The probe highlights the challenge presidents have historically faced in fulfilling campaign promises that require money to be spent — or suspended — at odds with Congress’ intent.”
The report comes as Biden faces strong backlash from members of both parties regarding his immigration policy changes. The president of Mexico has even joined in recent criticism’s of the president’s policies.
A letter to the Government Accountability Office from 40 Republican Senators noted “the weeks that followed” Biden suspending construction of the border wall that control of the southern border was comprised, leading to a new immigration crisis.
Biden has reversed many Trump immigration policies since his time in office. His first week executive orders included ending construction of the border wall, along with halting most deportations for 100 days.
More than 100,000 illegal immigrants crossed the nation’s southern border in February alone. The current pace will allow more than one million illegal immigrant into the U.S. by the end of 2021.
Emphasis has focused on unaccompanied children as well. More than 15,000 immigrant children are now in Border Patrol custody, leading to rapid expansion of holding facilities.
The Biden investigation regarding payments to companies involved in building the border wall adds additional economic impact to the crisis. The president’s immigration changes have both allowed a crisis of illegal immigrants into the nation, while hard-working Americans face the loss of jobs and income.
