Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee are grasping to revive old controversies regarding Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, sending a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray requesting information about the agency’s handling of tips received during its 2018 probe of misconduct allegations against the then-nominee for the high court, as The Hill reports.
Responding to a letter received from the FBI earlier this summer, the panel Democrats, led by Sens. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), fired off a number of questions, with special focus given to the manner in which over 4,500 tips received during the investigation were handled and the fact that President Donald Trump’s White House was made privy to ones declared “relevant” by agents, according to the Daily Wire.
The committee Democrats wrote, “The admissions in your letter corroborate and explain numerous credible accounts by individuals and firms that they had contacted the FBI with information ‘highly relevant to…allegations of sexual misconduct by Justice Kavanaugh, only to be ignored.”
According to the lawmakers, the disclosure made by the agency in June regarding the voluminous tips that had been received “confirms that the FBI’s tip line was a departure from past practice and that the FBI was politically constrained by the Trump White House,” The Hill further noted.
“It also belies the former president’s insistence that his administration did not limit the Bureau’s investigation of Justice Kavanaugh, and his claim that he ‘want[ed the FBI to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion,’” the letter continued, referencing the supplemental background investigation then-president Donald Trump instructed the FBI to conduct following the emergence of sexual misconduct claims amid his court confirmation process.
Kavanaugh’s rise to the high court was put into serious jeopardy when Christine Blasey Ford came forward to allege that the nominee had engaged in unwanted sexual conduct toward her decades prior when the two were students, ultimately testifying before the Judiciary panel to tell her story, which was plagued by significant inconsistencies and a dearth of supporting detail.
Amid news of the Democrats’ letter this week, attorneys for Blasey Ford opined that the FBI’s own admissions have revealed the supplemental probe of Kavanaugh to have been a “sham and a major institutional failure, according to NBC News.
“Because the FBI and Trump’s White House Counsel hid the ball on this, we do not know how many of those 4,500 tips were consequential, how many of those tips supported Dr. Ford’s testimony, or how many showed that Kavanaugh perjured himself during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee,” the attorneys added.
However, given that in the end, no corroboration was ever found for either Blasey Ford’s allegations or the number of other outlandish claims raised during Kavanaugh’s confirmation battle, it is shameful indeed that these opportunistic, left-wing politicians are doing their best to dredge up thoroughly discredited accusations against a sitting justice on the highest court in the land.
