Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced plans to hire 170 new police officers in a Wednesday statement as the district has recently faced multiple shootings.
“Right now, I have directed MPD to use any overtime necessary to meet our public safety demands,” the Democratic mayor wrote in a statement, according to Fox News.
“But we know that is not a complete solution or the right long-term solution. We also know we need all of our officers to be fresh, rested, and in the best position to make good decisions – and that requires having a full force to meet all of our community’s needs,” it added.
In addition to hiring more officers and cadets at MPD, my budget proposal includes $59 million in investments to reduce gun violence and ensure safer neighborhoods#saferstrongerDC https://t.co/XAkfoHXwsB

The announcement comes despite Muriel’s support of Black Lives Matter and defunding the police.
In 2020, the city council cut the police budget by $23 million, according to the Fox News report. 2020 ended with a a 16-year high in homicides.
Following a pattern of other cities that have slashed police budgets, violence has increased and officers have left the force, leading to the need to increase budgets and recruit new officers.
Despite the announcement, Muriel has not publicly changed her view on defunding the police, leaving her in the contradictory position of increasing funding for law enforcement while saying she wants to defund police.
