President Joe Biden is reportedly planning to make further changes to border controls that will likely increase illegal immigration, according to Breitbart News.
The publication cited experts that said the controls the executive branch wants to put a stop to have kept a significant number of illegal immigrants on the other side of the United States-Mexico border, and that changing the rules now would be bad for border security.
According to a Wall Street Journal article cited by Breitbart, the president will soon end the use of the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Title 42 order for migrant families.
Title 42 has, thus far, kept almost 650,000 border crossers from being released in the United States while allowing federal immigration officials to return illegal border crossers to the Mexico side of the border in an effort to retain public health.
“The pandemic-era emergency order, known as Title 42, prevents people who illegally enter the U.S. from seeking asylum, instead immediately expelling them to Mexico,” the Journal reported.
“The administration plans to stop applying the emergency order to migrant families by the end of July, these people said. Once the order is lifted, families that requested asylum at the border will be permitted to remain in the U.S. for the duration of their cases, which can take years to complete.”
Biden’s decision is baffling to many, considering that a Harvard/Harris Poll released late last month showed that about two out of every three voters wanted the previous administration’s border control measures reinstated, specifically those pertaining to returning illegal immigrants to Mexico.
The poll indicated that 64 percent of voters said Biden ought to “issue new, stricter policies to reduce the flow of people across the border,” a sentiment that is strongly at odds with progressive, Democrat activists.
