Rep. Ron Wright dead at 67 from complications of COVID-19

Rep. Ron Wright (R-TX) died from complications of COVID-19 on Sunday at the age of 67, Wright’s Congressional office confirmed on Monday.

Wright has had several significant health events after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018. He was hospitalized in September after experiencing severe side effects from his cancer treatments, which those close to him had characterized as “painful, sometimes debilitating.”

The Texas congressman announced in January that he had tested positive for COVID-19, and was admitted to the hospital with his wife, Susan, soon afterward.

Wright’s office confirmed he spent two weeks receiving medical care at Baylor Hospital in Dallas before succumbing to the effects of the deadly virus. Wife Susan survived her bout with COVID-19.

“He was a statesman, not an ideologue,” Wright’s office wrote in a statement announcing his death. “Ron and Susan dedicated their lives to fighting for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn. His wife Susan was by his side and he is now in the presence of their Lord and Savior.”

The statement continued:

Over the past few years, Congressman Wright had kept a rigorous work schedule on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and at home in Texas’ Congressional District 6 while being treated for cancer. For the previous two weeks, Ron and Susan had been admitted to Baylor Hospital in Dallas after contracting COVID-19.

Congressman Wright will be remembered as a constitutional conservative. He was a statesman, not an ideologue. Ron and Susan dedicated their lives to fighting for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn.

As friends, family, and many of his constituents will know, Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism until the very end. Despite years of painful, sometimes debilitating treatment for cancer, Ron never lacked the desire to get up and go to work, to motivate those around him, or to offer fatherly advice.

We ask that everyone give Susan and the entire Wright family and staff time to grieve. Additional information will be available on funeral arrangements and ways to honor Congressman Wright in the days to come.

Congressman Wright is survived by his wife, Susan; his son Derek; his son Justin and wife Susan; his daughter Rachel and husband Jeff; his brother Gary and wife Janis; nine grandchildren; cousins and extended family.

Wright was elected to represent Texas’ 6th Congressional District since 2019 and was described as a strong “constitutional conservative” during his tenure.

Wright is the first sitting Congressman to die from coronavirus. Rep.-elect Luke Letlow, (R-LA) passed away from COVID-19 at the age of 41 just before he was scheduled to be sworn in.

  1. He didn’t die from the virus! The article said he had bad lung cancer. Just because he tested positive for the virus, doesn’t mean that was the cause.

    1. It’s called sensationalism which the TV and radio thrive on… They don’t tell the “WHOLE TRuTH”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. However the primary cause of death was the Covid virus. he lung cancer was the secondary cause. If not for Covid he may still survived this month. That is how death certificates are filled out.

      1. BS – you are just like the MSM, forcing the Virus lies on the American public as a scare tactic.

  2. You fall off 10 story building DS put tag on your toe reading China virus 19 in order to collect $53,000 tax payers money.

  3. Give us all a break. First of all my sympathies to his family for it sounds like he battled his lung cancer for sometime and finally he lost the battle, but to say he died from covid virus is a long stretch. It’s sad but even if the family were speak out against the diagnosis of “death due to COVID” those in power would not listen. Now days anyone who dies, it is written on their death certificate “ due to covid virus”. They must keep the numbers up in order to keep us all under their control.

    1. What a bunch of liars those Demoncrats are. A day will come in which they will stand before a Holy God to give an acct of their sins and I am just praying that the Holy Spirit will bring such strong conviction on them that they will not be able to stand themselves and will fall on their knees and pray and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  4. This is so disgusting! This is fake news. He died of cancer. The day is coming when fake news will be shut down. Americans are not going to stand for this fake news. We are not a third world country and Americans are going to rise up and say enough is enough! God will prevail!

  5. Condolences to Congressman Wright’s family and friends; may God bless you, and comfort you in your time of mourning. Rest in peace, and thank you for fighting for conservative values; we need more men like you.

  6. For anyone with a weakened immune system communist China’s weaponized virus can be the straw that broke the camel’s back–so to speak. The Man was a fighter with heartfelt convictions. R.I.P.

  7. At this time of loss and grief our prayers go out to the family and friends. Too many people are cruel. these days. Let hatred evaporate to peace. We are all childred of God aren’t we?
