Rep. Jim Jordan: Democrat-led probes designed to thwart 2024 Trump bid

As autumn approaches, the House Select Committee probing the Jan. 6 unrest at the U.S. Capitol is reportedly contemplating the end of its work, and as the production of a final report may be in the offing, GOP Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) maintains that members of the panel – and those involved in other Democrat-led investigations – are guilty of attempting to thwart former President Donald Trump's possible presidential ambitions in 2024.

Jordan, who, as the Associated Press notes, was the recipient of a subpoena from the committee earlier this year, has long questioned the legitimacy of the investigation and has not indicated any willingness to provide testimony.

Speaking about the committee's request for his participation in its proceedings, Jordan wondered during a Fox News appearance earlier this year, "...why would they subpoena me? I didn't do anything wrong – I talked to the president."

"I talk to the president all the time. I just think that's – you know where I'm at on this commission – this is all about going after President Trump. That seems obvious," Jordan added.

Getting to the heart of why he believes the committee has persisted over the course of this year, Jordan observed, "everyone in the country sees this as a political operation. This is designed to get after President Trump. Because they don't want him to run again."

Given the history and recent actions of Jan. 6 committee Vice-Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), Jordan's assertion has more than the ring of truth about it.

Though nominally a member of the same political party as Trump, Cheney has engaged in a long and public crusade against him, vowing back in 2021 that she would do "everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office."

Indeed, even in the wake of her recent House primary defeat, Politico notes that Cheney is already poised to launch "an organization to educate the American people about the ongoing threat to our Republic, and to mobilize a unified effort to oppose any Donald Trump campaign for president."

Considering those words from one of the leading voices on the Jan. 6 panel, the ongoing state and federal probes of Trump's finances, and the recent FBI raid of the former president's Florida estate, Jordan's claim that the Democrats and their allies are paralyzed with fear that he will seek the White House once more and are prepared to do whatever it takes to prevent such a scenario grows more persuasive by the day.
