Rep. Byron Donalds is the latest 'rising star' in the Republican Party from Florida

The Washington Examiner just published a report in which it identified U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) as a "rising leader" in the Republican Party.

In its reports, the Examiner highlights several recent moves that Donalds, who was just recently elected to his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, has made to "raise his profile."

Two of these moves came in and around the 2022 midterm elections. Donalds, for one, faced off against U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) to be the chair of the House Republican conference. Stefanik managed to win that race by a vote of 144 to 74.

Then, when House Republicans were picking the next speaker, Donalds became one of the chief alternatives to U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). McCarthy, after making a number of concessions to his fellow Republicans, did finally emerge as the next House speaker.

Although Donalds lost both challenges, the Examiner argues that "the moves illustrate where Donalds's sights are set as he raises his profile nationally." And, his sights appear to be set on a more prominent position in government.

In fact, Donalds's aspirations appear to go beyond the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Examiner separately reports that Donalds has confirmed that he is open to potentially becoming the next governor of Florida, succeeding current Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

Donalds's next opportunity to become Florida governor will be either in 2024 or 2026. It depends on whether or not DeSantis decides to make a bid at the U.S. presidency. So far, he has not indicated whether he will do so.

But, even if DeSantis does not run for the presidency in 2024, he will not be able to seek reelection in 2026 due to the state's term limits. So, in 2026, someone is going to have to succeed DeSantis, and Donalds could be that individual - he is certainly positioning himself as a candidate.

One other way that Donalds is raising his profile, particularly nationally, is through the media.

Donalds has made frequent appearances on news media programs, where he has targeted Democrats and the administration of President Joe Biden.

Donalds also recently spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where, according to the Examiner, he "introduced himself as a fighter for conservative values."

Donalds, though, has also made a clear attempt to appeal to voters who align more to the center of the political spectrum.

As the Examiner suggests, all signs really do seem to indicate that Donalds is a rising star in the Republican Party, and, more generally, in national politics.
