Jamin Pugh, known as pro wrestling's 'Jay Briscoe' dies at 38

Ring of Honor wrestling reports that Jay Briscoe - the professional wrestler whose real name is Jamin Pugh - has died at the age of 38.

Ring of Honor (ROH) made the announcement on Tuesday on its Twitter page.

"It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the tragic passing of Jamin Pugh, known to wrestling fans around the world as Jay Briscoe," ROH wrote, "Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and his fans."

The news of Pugh's passing was confirmed by Tony Khan, the CEO of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and the owner of ROH.

"Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away," Kahn tweeted.

He continued:

Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today. Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We'll do whatever we can to support his family. Rest In Peace Jamin.

On Tuesday night, Dave Meltzer - the pro wrestling reporter - revealed the cause of Pugh's death.

"Tony Khan tweeted the death of Jay Briscoe in an auto accident," Meltzer wrote. "Two people in the car died in an accident at 5:30 p.m. in Laurel, Maryland. Just horribly tragic news."

Ringside News reports that Pugh, at the time of the crash, was driving home with his daughter from a cheerleading competition. While Pugh died, his daughter is listed as a "critical pediatric."

According to Ringside News, two other people were also involved in the crash, and, of those two people, one died and the other is in critical condition.

Pugh was one of professional wrestling's top tag-team wrestlers alongside his brother "Mark Briscoe." They are the current tag-team champions, an honor which they have held no less than 13 times. Jay has also been the ROH world champion twice.

Jay and Mark Briscoe have been members of ROH wrestling since 2002, and, last year, the two were inducted into ROH's inaugural hall of fame.

Many of Jay Briscoe's fans and fellow professional wrestlers have taken to social media to express their condolences and to offer tributes.

Among them was fellow pro wrestler Matt Hardy, who wrote:

Heard this tragic news while flying. I'm DEVASTATED that Jay Briscoe (Jamin Pugh) tragically died today. I was honored to work with him many times. I loved Jay. Jay was SO real. Jay loved his wife & kids more than anything & we shared that bond. I'm heartbroken for his family.
