Pro-police reform representative carjacked at gunpoint in Pennsylvania

Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was carjacked at gunpoint, but unharmed, despite her stance on police reform in areas like Philadelphia, according to Breitbart News

The crime took place in the City of Brotherly Love in the afternoon on Wednesday, according to Scanlon’s statement to police, somewhere near FDR Park, following a tour with a fellow member of Congress.

6 ABC reported that as Scanlon was walking to her vehicle she was approached by several armed men in a dark-colored SUV who demanded the keys to her 2017 Acura MDX, which was last seen being driven westbound on Pattison toward Penrose.

“She thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety,” Lauren Cox, a spokesperson for Scanlon, said in a statement.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) said of the event: “It’s disheartening, and quite frankly infuriating, that criminals feel emboldened to commit such a reckless crime in the middle of the day in what should be a place of tranquility and peace-one of Philadelphia’s beautiful parks. My thoughts are with her during what I’m sure is a traumatic time.”

“The Congresswoman was physically unharmed. She thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety,” Scanlon’s office said in a statement.

Thus far, the Philadelphia Police Department has reported 521 homicides for the year 2021, which is a 13 percent increase compared to 2020 and is a 14 year high for the city.

Additionally, there has been an 80% increase in carjackings in 2021, police told FOX 29 earlier this month.
