Pompeo warns of uptick in Chinese purchases of American farmland

As tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to rise, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is sounding the alarm on a concerning trend that has seen Chinese government-affiliated parties purchasing and invading vast swaths of American farmland – much of which is situated near key strategic locations, as the Daily Wire reports.

In a tweet posted earlier this week, Pompeo noted, “CCP-controlled entities are now buying up American farmland, much of which is near U.S. military bases. Yet, our diplomats in China can’t even go to the grocery store without someone following them. We have to take this seriously.”

Pompeo continued, “Let me be clear – China, under the rule of the CCP, is the greatest threat to the U.S. in our history. It touches every facet of American life: military, education, the private sector, our government, and more. It will take real, unified effort in each for America to stay on top.”

In an especially concerning example of the aforementioned phenomenon, Chinese manufacturer Fufeng Group took control of 300 acres of property in North Dakota, located just 20 minutes away from the Grand Forks Air Base, which is home to sensitive American military drone capabilities.

As the outlet noted, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced legislation earlier this year designed to prevent foreign entities linked to the CCP from acquiring public or private farmland in the U.S., and though some American states have already banned foreign ownership of such lands, investors from China often skirt those rules by acquiring domestic companies that already own it.

Pompeo and Newhouse are certainly not alone in their opposition to further expansion of Chinese state-affiliated land holdings in America, with Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (FL) opining, “It is dangerous, foolish, and shortsighted to allow the Chinese Communist Party and its proxies to purchase land near U.S. military installations. This is something we must address.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Thursday during an appearance on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, when he underscored the sense of urgency he feels the subject now demands.

“We’re still working with Democrats and Republicans trying to explain the threat to them and explain what we need to do to stop it…,” Cotton began. “In China, you don’t just get to leave the country or take your money out of the country without government permission, government oversight. It’s not like America. You can’t just go buy a farm in Canada… . The people who are coming out of China to buy farmland…are doing so because the Chinese communists want them to.”

As Cotton emphasized, “This is a national security threat and it surrenders the massive strategic advantage we have here in America that we are the world’s breadbasket while China can’t feed its own people without food imports,” but whether Congress has the political will to heed his warning and take concrete steps to neutralize the danger, only time will tell.
