The far-left has presented the argument to defund the police as the only right opinion, one that any reasonable American must be on board with in order to promote justice and peace.
However, Americans are simply not jumping on board with the proposals. Recent polls show that the vast majority of Americans are resistant to the idea. According to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll, almost two-thirds of Americans have said they do not support defunding law enforcement.
Even the feel-good proposal of redirecting funds from police forces isn’t taking off with Americans, with 60 percent of respondents indicating that they do not support redistributing police funds to public health and social programs.
While Democrats and Republicans were predictably split along ideological lines in the poll, the Washington Examiner noted that independent voters appeared to side with the GOP’s resistance to the radical proposals. “The majority of independents, with 67%, oppose defunding the police and 59% are against redistributing money from police departments to other social programs,” the Examiner noted.
Democrat lawmakers are walking the tightrope between appeasing far-left activists that have made their goal of ultimately abolishing the police clear, and their voter base that does not want less policing in American streets.
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) said that Democrat law enforcement reform proposals will take “hard look at our practices and have reforms where we need them,” but said that “we need the police. We want the police. They have a role to play. Let’s not get so carried away that we allow sloganeering to hijack this movement.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) echoed Clyburn’s comments, punting efforts to defund or abolish the police to lawmakers at a local level. “What it means is, let us take the resources that we have, let us spend it in a way that gives the most protection to the American people, protection for their safety, protection for their rights,” she said on Monday.
