A recent Rasumussen Reports poll reveals that a jarring number of Americans believe that violent crime has worsened in recent months, with many also doubting the likelihood that President Joe Biden can or will bring it under control, as Breitbart reports.
Released on Friday, the survey of 900 likely voters conducted between May 25 and 26 asked respondents about their perception of whether the issue of violent crime in the country is getting better or getting worse.
An alarming 65% of participants indicated their belief that crime in this realm is worsening, 22% said the problem of violent crime is remaining about the same, and a mere 10% suggested that things are in fact improving.
Interestingly, party affiliation did not seem to play a significant role in the answers given by respondents, as 72% of Republican voters indicated a worsening of violent crime along with 65% of independents and 59% of Democrats.
The poll also probed the degree of confidence voters of different ideological persuasions have in Biden’s ability to rein in the problem of escalating violent crime, and the results were not tremendously encouraging for the White House.
Roughly half of respondents revealed a lack of faith in the president’s capacity to handle the rise in crime, and 35% of those declaring they are “not at all confident.” A total of 46% of participants indicated some degree of confidence in Biden’s ability to address growing crime levels, with 20% identifying themselves as “very confident.”
Of note is the fact that respondents from the Democrat wing of the electorate gave much greater credence than those from the GOP to the notion that Biden has what it takes to reduce violent crime, by a margin of 77% to 20%.
As Breitbart noted, Fox News prime time host Tucker Carlson addressed the violent crime crisis during his program last week, suggesting that the main driver of the increase is the fact that “stupid, malicious people took control, the Democratic Party took full control” at state and local levels and that “their policies resulted in a huge number of killings.”
Biden, for his part, continues to push for passage of police reform he says is designed to “root out systemic racism in our criminal justice system,” and as such, his unwillingness to confront the true drivers of violent crime and his propensity to kowtow to far-left factions in his party suggest that the majority of respondents in the Rasmussen survey are correct in their doubts about his ability to alter the regrettable trajectory being seen in cities across the country.
