The mainstream media viciously attacked former President Donald Trump before he even took office. Now, their credibility has taken a hit after more than four years of the barrage of attacks, smears, and lies.
A TIPP Insights poll revealed that 53% of Americans don’t trust “traditional” media outlets like NPR, New York Times, Washington Post, and other “established” media outlets, the Daily Caller reported. The poll was conducted in April and gives an insight into how little faith the nation has in all reporting.
The breakdown in the degree of mistrust for the mainstream media is telling. A quarter of respondents said they have “no trust at all” in the traditional media, and 28% said they had “little trust.” On the positive side of responses, only 15% said they have “a lot of trust” in those established media outlets and 25% had “quite a bit of trust.”
Some in the media have pinpointed the reasons so very few have faith in these outlets. “I know our credibility has been shredded,” CBS “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl said recently. “And while Donald Trump went a long way to make those tears, he didn’t start it. It was that way for many years before he became president. We have a problem.”
Paul Sperry, author and New York Post columnist identified a litany of scandals that the media has covered up or failed to report. They ignored the open secret of President Bill Clinton’s inappropriate tryst with Monica Lewinsky, actively suppressed the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, concealed the identity of the officer who shot Ashli Babbitt in the Jan. 6 incursion at the Capitol, and even obscured the truth about the spate of hate crimes they’ve blamed on white supremacy.
“The real story, suppressed for months, is a rash of black-on-Asian hate crime, not white-on-Asian hate crime, which is why Asians are hiring the Proud Boys for protection,” Sperry said. “This is bias by neglect and omission,” he later continued “all to protect Democrats or political narratives, which is almost as bad as manufacturing fake news (Russiagate) and smearing Republicans and conservatives.”
Despite this clear bias in the establishment media, alternative media outlets fared a bit worse with 60% of people responding they don’t trust the alternative media. That makes sense considering the way outlets like One America News Network, Newsmax, and even the New York Post are denigrated, but the establishment media’s credibility problem is more significant given their previous decades-long dominance.
It’s difficult to know who to believe anymore when it comes to news. However, what’s clear is that consumers are more cynical than ever about the narratives being fed to them, and that healthy skepticism takes the power away from those who are spreading propaganda rather than objective news.
