Democrats have had some horrible ideas in the past, but defunding the police has to be the worst. It looks like the American people agree.
A joint poll by Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company (R) found that 62% of registered voters believe funds should not be funneled away from police, Breitbart reported. Also noteworthy is that only 33% of respondents were in favor of defunding police.
Among Republicans, 87% were opposed to the measure as well as 79% of Evangelicals. Among Hispanics, their responses were about dead even with 46% in favor and 47% opposed to the measure.
The poll was conducted between April 18-21 and was a sampling of over 1,000 voters. The timing was significant because it was during the final days of the trial and verdict for the Derek Chauvin trial, the former Minneapolis police officer who was charged and convicted of three counts of murder for the death of George Floyd.
Floyd’s death while in police custody was the catalyst for nationwide violence and civil unrest, many protests planned under the banner of Black Lives Matter. Aside from over $1 billion in damages the riots caused, it also sparked outcries to defund police.
While scaling back police budgets appeased the racial injustice industry, it has predictably led to increased crime where it’s been tried, Fox News reported. Minneapolis, which became ground zero for the BLM and defund police movements, saw a 22% increase in crime between July 22, 2020, and March 28 compared to the same time period the year before.
New York City went through with its plan to shift $1 billion away from the New York City Police Department last July. As of March 21 this year, murders were up by 11.8% while the number of shootings soared by 40.1% in that same time period.
Defunding police is unpopular among the American people because it’s a bad idea. While the narrative is that black and brown people are in danger of being shot by police, the truth is that law enforcement keeps neighborhoods filled with all kinds of people — white, black, brown, and other — safe and secure.
