A new poll reports more American voters would choose former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris if they faced one another in the 2024 presidential election — terrible news for Democrats hoping Harris is next in line for the Democrat nomination.
The McLaughlin & Associates poll asked participants how they would “vote in the general election for president between Donald Trump, the Republican candidate and Kamala Harris, the Democrat candidate” in 2024.
Forty-nine percent of respondents said they would vote for Trump. Just 45 percent said they would vote for Harris.
Trump ranked higher among Independent voters as well, with 49 percent preferring Trump over Harris.
The survey, conducted from May 12 to 18 and including more than 1,000 voters, also showed 64 percent of respondents believe Harris will become president before President Joe Biden’s four-year term ends.
The poll reveals several interesting preferences among likely American voters. The majority believe Harris will lead the nation before 2024.
In addition, the majority of voters would still choose Trump over Harris, who lost to Biden and Harris in 2020. Though the vice president performed well as a running mate, her popularity as a presidential candidate ranks lower.
Though much time remains until the next presidential election, voters are already looking forward to making a new choice at the poll. Many appear eager to replace the current president, or expect to see him end his time in office soon.
