Poll finds majority believe someone other than Joe Biden is running the country

A new poll has found that the majority of U.S. voters do not believe that President Joe Biden is the person who is really running the country.

The poll comes from Rasmussen Reports. The pollster conducted a survey of 1,117 U.S. Likely Voters between April 30 and May 2, 2023. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Among the questions that the pollster asked participants was this: "Is Joe Biden really doing the job of president, or are others making decisions for him behind the scenes?"

Before Biden's administration even got going, there was already speculation about who would really be running the show, with many suggesting that Biden would just be the figurehead, while it would be former President Barrack Obama calling the shots.

This remains speculation. But, the poll indicates that most voters seem to believe that there is at least some truth to this.

Rasmussen found that 55% of participants said that "others are making decisions for him behind the scenes." That's compared to only 38% who believe that Biden is "really doing" his job.

According to Rasmussen, this is the first time that a majority said that someone other than Biden is leading his administration.

Part of what is driving this sort of speculation has to be Biden's old age and the decline in mental and physical abilities that have come with it.

On the same poll, Rassmussen asked participants:

President Joe Biden is now 80 years old. He recently announced that he will run for reelection next year. In terms of his chances of winning reelection, how serious of a problem will his age be?

The pollster found that a clear majority - 73% - think that Biden's age will be a serious problem as he pursued reelection. A near majority - 49% - said that they expect it to be a "very serious problem."

This result is not an anomaly. Countless other polls have found the same thing: Americans believe that Biden's old age is a problem in terms of his ability to lead the country.

Biden would almost be 82 years old at the start of his second term, were he to be reelected, meaning that he would be almost 86 years old at the conclusion of the term.

Biden has been doing what he can to push back on criticism regarding his age.

After announcing his bid for reelection, he said:

I respect [Americans] taking a hard look at [my age] — I'd take a hard look at it, as well. I took a hard look at it before I decided to run, and I feel good. I feel excited about the prospects.
