Any time former President Donald Trump did anything the left didn’t agree with, they called him a dictator. However, with Democrats in power, brazenly authoritarian rule has become the norm in Washington, D.C.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has reportedly threatened to misuse Congressional budget reconciliation to ram through another COVID-19 stimulus package without Republican support. Once passed in the House of Representatives, it would enable the Senate to use the measure to rubberstamp anything the Democrats want.
“We will pass a reconciliation bill — if we need it,” Pelosi told reporters at a news conference Thursday. “We would hope that we would have bipartisan cooperation to meet the needs of the American people. I hope we don’t need it but if needed we will have it,” she said of the tactic.
Pelosi, who played politics for months while obstructing attempts to pass a second relief bill before the 2020 presidential election, will set up the process as a budget matter. When the Democrat-controlled House passes the budget resolution, it will head to the Senate where a simple majority will allow it to sail through, Fox News reported.
Because the Senate is a 50-50 tie, Vice President Kamala Harris would be the tiebreaker, meaning Republicans would be left powerless to stop it. The rules were meant to only apply to budgetary matters but when misused, they are troublingly powerful because they prevent a filibuster on the vote.
While Republicans agree that another COVID-19 package is necessary, the hefty $1.9 trillion relief gives many GOP lawmakers pause. Republicans are also concerned with additional stimulus money they already took a stand against while President Donald Trump was still in office due to the crushing deficit it would create.
“Our preference is to make this important work bipartisan, to include input, ideas, and revisions from our Republican colleagues or bipartisan efforts to do the same,” Rep. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on the Senate floor Thursday. “But if our Republican colleagues decide to oppose this urgent and necessary legislation, we will have to move forward without them.”
Americans need relief from the coronavirus shutdowns the government has imposed on them. However, there is a process for passing legislation that is designed to make sure it truly is the will of the people as expressed by their representative government. As usual, the tyrannical left will run roughshod over the American people unconcerned with the authoritarian system they’re crafting.
