House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) does not want to oust controversial GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). It could be because they are lost without former President Donald Trump to kick around.
Pelosi just ended speculation that she and other key Democrats approved of a resolution to have Greene removed from the House of Representatives, according to Fox News. Greene has already been removed from her committees for past tweets, but a Democrat-led resolution Friday sought to have her expelled from the Congress altogether.
The freshman GOP representative has been under fire for past tweets. Some of Greene’s worst included support for QAnon and 9/11 conspiracy theories as well as speculation that California wildfires were started by Jewish laser beams from space, The New York Times reported.
She has become something of an albatross for the Republican party, but it was Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) who introduced the resolution Friday. Gomez claimed he felt “no joy” in advancing his resolution, but that “any member who incites political violence and threatens our lives must be expelled.”
Curiously, Pelosi wasn’t on board with this latest measure. “Members are very unhappy about what happened here and they can express themselves in the way they do,” Pelosi told reporters during a news conference. “What Mr. Gomez did is his own view and that is not a leadership position.”
Pelosi had endorsed the vote that successfully removed Greene from two of her committee appointments and chided Republicans who didn’t side with the Democrat majority. “I remain profoundly concerned about House Republicans’ leadership acceptance of extreme conspiracy theorists,” she said at the time. “Particularly disturbing is their eagerness to reward a QAnon adherent, a 9/11 truther, a harasser of child survivors of school shootings.”
On the same day Gomez called for her removal, Twitter temporarily banned Greene from its platform, USA Today reported. However, the social media giant denied it was intentional and issued a statement blaming an automated system for the error. “This action has been reversed, and access to the account has been reinstated,” the statement said.
It’s a notable shift for Pelosi. She certainly wanted Greene removed from committees to be stripped of power, but she doesn’t want her out of Congress completely. It’s likely Pelosi sees her as a way to pin extremism and conspiratorial nonsense on the whole of the Republican party. With Trump no longer in office, Pelosi needs a new target for her attacks.
