Rogers: Nancy Pelosi will retire if Republicans win the House

While most of the nation and nearly every media outlet is transfixed by the presidential election, the fight for Congress is just as contentious, and possible even more important.

Democrats are quietly mounting a major assault on Republican senators and representatives, hoping to keep the House and take over the Senate. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) revealed during an interview this week that if Democrats lose the House in November, current Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will retire

Rogers, who is the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, told Mobile, AL radio FM Talk 106.5 hosts, “you know, [Pelosi] made a deal with the devil in the last cycle that if they let her be speaker for two more terms, she would retire.”

The Alabama congressman noted that Pelosi is 80 years old currently, and would by 82 by the end of the next term and that she would “struggle to get them to honor the second half of that commitment to let her stay speaker.”

“If [Republicans] take the House back, she’s gone,” he declared. “I think she’ll go ahead and announce her retirement.”

Rogers also speculated that if House Democrats suffer a major defeat in October, other senior Democrat leaders could join Pelosi in retiring. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) could also choose to cut their loses, leaving top leadership positions up for grabs.

However, Rogers warned that the potential retirements of life-long Democrat legislators aren’t especially good news for Americans.

“If that happens, you’ll see a complete sea change,” he warned. “I think Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn will all go ahead and announce their retirements because they’ll be overthrown and the new emerging leaders of that conference will be scary to most Americans, who are in the middle of the political spectrum.”

Currently, Democrats hold a slight edge over Republicans in the race for the House, though other election polls haven’t been entirely accurate up to this point, casting doubt on the lead Democrats want everyone to believe they have.
