House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) indicated on Thursday during her daily press conference that Democrats may be planning to remove President Trump via the 25th amendment.
Though Pelosi did not expand upon the plot, she told reporters as an aside while discussing options for coronavirus relief: “Come here tomorrow. We’re going to talk about the 25th Amendment.”
The 25th amendment is a favorite trope of anti-Trumpers, and references to invoking the amendment have been made since Trump’s inauguration in 2017.
Pelosi knows that impeachment is essentially out of the question after she spent months in 2019 and early 2020 dragging the nation through a removal attempt the proved fruitless.
However, it appears that Pelosi may be making a play to utilize the 25th amendment to use Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis as just cause for removing him from office.
The 25th amendment establishes the line of succession should the president or vice president become incapacitated, perish, or resign. Fox News explained:
The 25th Amendment requires a declaration of the president’s inability from the vice president and either a majority of either the heads of executive branch departments “or of such other body as Congress may by law provide,” to be sent to the speaker of the House–in this case, Pelosi–and the president pro tempore of the Senate–currently Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.
Pelosi has refused to clarify what plans she has up her sleeve, but has ramped up her attacks on and speculation about Trump’s health since the news of his diagnosis broke last week.
“I think that the public needs to know the health condition of the President,” Pelosi said earlier during the press conference, “There’s one question that he refused to answer … when was his last negative test?”
The speaker said that she needs the information in order to “make a judgment about the actions that were taken after that. Let us see a date, a time when you last tested negative,” she pressed.
