Pelosi plans commission to continue investigation into January 6 riot

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appeared very unhappy as she spoke in the aftermath of the U.S. Senate voting to acquit former President Donald Trump of the impeachment charge brought against him.

According to Breitbart, even though most Americans have moved on, Pelosi and some of her Democratic colleagues aren’t quite yet finished with investigating the events that led up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, as she announced that she supports a “9/11 style” commission that would further investigate the circumstances that led to the tragic event.ย

In a letter sent to many of her colleagues, Pelosi laid out the reasoning behind her push for a commission, which echoed calls she made in January after the Capitol riots took place.

“It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened,” Pelosi wrote, referencing retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen Russel Honorรฉ, who was asked by the Speaker to conduct an assessment of the Capitol’s security protocols.

Pelosi’s idea has already gained some level of bipartisan support, as several Republican senators expressed their interest in such a commission during the Sunday talk show circuit, including senators who voted in favor of convicting Mr. Trump and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), one of the former president’s strongest allies in Congress.

“We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again,” Graham said, joining several Democrats on the matter.

Interestingly, Pelosi’s renewed push for the commission comes around the same time that a number of Republican lawmakers are demanding that the Speaker answer questions regarding reports that have emerged which suggest Pelosi’s office refused to approve a National Guard presence at the Capitol as the riots began.

According to the New York Post, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Devin Nunes (R-CA) wrote a joint letter to Pelosi’s office demanding to know why their requests for information on security failures at the Capitol on Jan. 6 were denied.

The Speaker has also faced increased scrutiny over the continued deployment of thousands of National Guard troops at the Capitol, where there hasn’t been any activity since the riots nor do there appear to be any active threats.
