House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) declared during a Thursday press conference that the lower chamber will create a partisan select committee charged with probing the unrest that took place at the Capitol back on Jan. 6, as NBC News reports.
The speaker’s announcement comes after Republicans in the Senate succeeded in blocking progress of a House-passed measure that would have installed a bipartisan commission to explore the circumstances surrounding the events of that day.
In publicizing the move on Thursday, Pelosi said, “This morning with great solemnity and sadness I’m announcing that the House will be establishing a select committee on the Jan. 6 insurrection,” pointedly using the hyperbolic term preferred by Democrats to describe what occurred.
Pelosi’s partisan committee will, according to the speaker, “investigate and report on the facts and the causes of the attack and it will report recommendations for the prevention of any future attack,” as Breitbart noted, and as NBC news further reported, she announced no definitive timeline for the committee’s work to be completed, nor did she provide details on its composition or who might be tapped to lead it.
In articulating her reasons for the decision, Pelosi opined, “Jan. 6 was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day and ensure an attack of that kind cannot happen, and that we root out the causes of it all.”
According to Pelosi, “the select committee is about our democracy, and about ensuring that the Capitol dome remains a symbol of freedom, about preserving America’s role as an emblem of resilience, determination and hope. That is our purpose, that is what the select committee will be about, and that is about seeking and finding the truth.” The speaker added a final jab at those on the other side of the aisle, insisting, “It is clear that the Republicans are afraid of the truth.”
The speaker’s self-professed determination to find the truth, however, only extends to certain topics, as Breitbart further reports that she continues to ignore Republican calls for the creation of a panel charged with delving into the origins of COVID-19 and the potential involvement of Chinese authorities in its worldwide emergence.
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) is among those who have called Pelosi out for her resistance to an open and transparent inquiry on the subject, telling the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference last week, “Pelosi won’t do it…They are covering for China right now. It’s a Soviet-style cover-up,” as Just the News noted.
It is becoming increasingly clear that when it comes to expending time and resources for investigatory purposes, Pelosi is only interested if the endeavor seems likely to yield partisan advantage. If it is merely aimed at holding responsible parties accountable for triggering a viral pandemic that devastated lives and economies across the globe, count her out.
