House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may be enjoying her time presiding over a majority. However, it’s increasingly becoming a possibility that the 2022 midterm elections could change all of that.
Pelosi’s vision of retaining power is collapsing as her slim House majority is ravaged by a spate of departures and retirements, Breitbart reported. Some are wondering if the Speaker isn’t far behind herself.
Departures have been rolling in since March and have continued through the summer. This month, Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) has decided to leave for a Senate bid to replace the retiring Pat Toomey (R-PA). Meanwhile, Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) announced he would be retiring amid reports that he allegedly collected rental income on a sex-for-hire massage parlor.
June brought an announcement from Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) that she would also be running for Senate with an eye toward unseating Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) in 2022 if she wins the Democratic primary. This move could spell a possible flip for Republicans after her seat is vacated.
Springtime seemed to be the worst for Pelosi, however. Both Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-AZ) and Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced their retirement in March, likely due to the immigration disaster unfolding in their border states.
April brought a major announcement with Cheri Bustos (D-IL) announcing she would not seek re-election. Bustos’s seat is in danger of going to the GOP considering she only eeked out her 2020 victory in her district that went for former President Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020.
That same month, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) announced he would be giving up his seat to run for Senate. It appears he may be escaping an inevitable GOP takeover as both his district and the state lean more Republican with each election cycle.
With her majority now hanging by a thread, Pelosi, who is 81 years old, may not hang in there to see it slip away. It appears 2022 is increasingly becoming an uphill climb for the Democrats with every new announcement — and it’s hard to imagine she’ll stick around to watch Republicans take over.
