House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is attempting to gain political favor along with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) by blocking black Senator Tim Scott’s (R-SC) police reform bill and then blaming the lack of progress on Republicans.

Pelosi accused Senate Republicans of trying to “get away with the murder of George Floyd” earlier this week, but when she made a speech about House Democrats’ counter-proposal on Friday, she couldn’t even remember Floyd’s name.

During her Friday floor speech hyping up the Democrat bill, she crowed that the proposal is worthy of “George Kirby’s name.” George Kirby was a black comedian and singer who died in 1995.

Pelosi told reporters that Floyd’s brother had requested that the House police reform bill be named in his honor. She continued:

And I said ‘I’ll recommend that to the Judiciary Committee and to the Congressional Black Caucus who have shaped the bill, but I only will do that if you tell me that this legislation is worthy of George Kirby’s name,’ and he said it is, and so we’re very proud, we’re very proud to carry that.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also couldn’t be bothered to use the correct name when speaking about the slain Minneapolis man earlier this week. Schumer went a different route than Pelosi, referring to Floyd as “Floyd Taylor,” conflating his name with Breonna Taylor’s, another Black victim of a recent police shootout.

Pelosi and Schumer’s slips are indicative of the entire Democrat party’s attitude about George Floyd’s death.

Even though Senate Republicans have proposed a bill that makes meaningful police reforms without completely hamstringing law enforcement agencies in response to Floyd’s death, Pelosi and Schumer have explicitly rejected what should be a strong bipartisan solution.

They know that if they can block Republicans from passing police reform, Democrats will be able to use the issue to campaign with in November. It’s a starkly political move, and sadly, a move the media is allowing them to get away with.
