Paul Ryan: Trump 'not going to be' GOP nominee in 2024

Further inflaming a feud that has endured over the past few years, former Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday weighed in on the 2024 race for the White House, opining that former President Donald Trump will almost certainly be replaced as his party's nominee, as the New York Post reports.

Ryan's comments came during an interview with Washington, D.C. consulting firm Teneo, an enterprise for which he currently serves as a vice-chairman.

In Ryan's estimation, Trump is unlikely to prevail against the putative Democrat candidate in the next election cycle, and therefore it would make little sense for the GOP to award him the nomination.

"We all know he will lose, or let me put it this way: we all know he's much more likely to lose the White House than anybody else running for president on our side of the aisle. So why would be want to go with that?" wondered the former legislator from Wisconsin.

Taking yet another swipe at Trump, Ryan added, "He's going to try to intimidate people out of the race as long as he can. Whether he runs or not, I don't really know if it matters... . He's not going to be the nominee, I don't think.

Though Ryan did not offer any specific names of likely challengers to Trump's potential electoral ambitions, he confidently asserted, as the Post further noted, "There's a handful of people that are going to run, because it's the only cycle they can run in. They can't wait until 2028. They've got to go now, if they're ever going to go. And they don't want to die without ever trying."

The remarks from Ryan are just the latest salvo in his ongoing war of words with the former commander-in-chief, a battle of wills that dates back to at least 2019, when the former was said to have told Politico correspondent Tim Alberta that Trump "didn't know anything about government."

That comment prompted Trump to declare that "the only success Paul Ryan had was the time that he was me," adding that Ryan "didn't know what the hell he was doing" and blaming him for losing the GOP House majority in 2018.

The bad blood between the two continued apace this summer, when Trump labeled Ryan a "pathetic loser" and a "weak RINO" for lamenting that more Republicans did not have the "guts" to back the former president's impeachment, but whether their rancorous dispute will indeed play any substantive role in the 2024 nomination process, only time will tell.
